چکیده

A new methodology is presented for the model estimation of an import–export pollution balance across country borders based on the classification of the synoptic scale atmospheric circulation. As an application, the transboundary transport of SO2 and NOx across the Greek borders is investigated for the year 1995. The annual total inflow–outflow fluxes were derived by weighting the model results with the annual relative frequency of the corresponding synoptic type appearance. The results of the new modelling method are similar to those following the day-by-day calculation of the inflow–outflow fluxes for the whole year 1995 using the same models. The advantage of the new methodology is that it is definitely less time-consuming than the day-by-day calculations. Hence, the proposed methodology can be employed as a practical tool for several applications requiring the implementation of complex models over longer time periods.  2003 Elsevier Ltd. A transboundary transport episode of nitrogen dioxide as observed from GOME and its impact in the Alpine region

High tropospheric NO2 amounts are occasionally detected by space-borne spectrometers above cloudy scenes. For monitoring of near-ground air pollution such data are not directly applicable because clouds shield the highly polluted planetary boundary layer (PBL). We present a method based on trajectories which implicitly estimates the additional subcloud NO2 distribution in order to model concent...

Space, time and nesting Integrated Assessment Models

Integrated Assessment Modelling in the field of air pollution has advanced greatly since the 1985 Helsinki Protocol on the reduction of Sulphur emissions and their transboundary fluxes. With subsequent protocols and increased understanding of the inter-relationships between local air quality, transboundary air pollution and climate change, a variety of spatio-temporal issues must be addressed i...

Tuovinen J-P - Ozone flux modelling for risk assessment: status and research needs

Introduction In Europe, the development of air pollution abatement strategies is founded on the ef fects-based approach, which includes the ozone-induced plant injury as one of the key effects to be minimized. Within this frame work, the risk of ozone damage to vegetation is related to numerical exposure and dose in dices (UNECE 2004b, Simpson et al. 2007, Tuovinen et al. 2007). Both types o...

EHPnet: Economic Commission for Europe's Environment and Human Settlements Division

Pollution does not respect international borders anywhere, but in Europe, with its heavy industrialization and small nations, this is particularly evident. By the 1970s, it had become apparent that air pollution from other nations was contributing to the acidification of lakes in Sweden and the deterioration of statues and monuments in countries such as Germany and Austria. A 1986 industrial ac...
